Sociologists use the term “androcentrism” to refer to a new kind of sexism, one that replaces the favoring of men over women with the favoring of masculinity over femininity. According to the rules of androcentrism, men and women alike are rewarded, but only insofar as they are masculine (e.g., they play sports, drink whiskey, and are lawyers or surgeons w00t!). Meanwhile, men are punished for doing femininity and women… well, women are required to do femininity and simultaneously punished for it.

I think the ‘women are required to do femininity and simultaneously punished for it’ bit sums up 90% of sexism in one sentence.

I am so glad there is a new term for this “masculine privilege” thing I was speculating about.

hmmmm - thinking about this a little bit.  i’m very “yes” and “no” about it - as a chubby “ugly” and decidedly not “feminine” kid, i don’t perceive that i got too many rewards for it over my more feminine counterparts.   i generally don’t also perceive i’ll be rewarded for adopting more “masculine” traits.  also, i think that butch women are policed really, really highly - i almost think they are more visible as women (as “bad” women in particular) for having “masculine” traits.   (funny - my butch friends have the squishiest hearts of all lol!  like really, really squishy ass hearts).

but then on the other hand there is something i agree with a lot about this.  and i can’t put my finger on it right now, but wanna bookmark it for later!

i think it’s moreso that everyone is punished for femininity to varying degrees, rather than everyone being rewarded for masculinity, because you are absolutely right about masculine women being shamed. don’t forget though that while personal stories may confirm or contradict the basic premise, looking at how things work on macro or systemic levels will tell us whether the theory holds up.
