It’s such a pure crystallization of every hangup/issue/problem I have with (East) Asian men that everything from the girl’s expression to her hair to her hand gesture is just making me twitch uncontrollably.

and white people yall need to hear this

howtobeterrell:

IF U cry or get upset about some shit I say on here and u feel personally attacked (good, I’ve done my job lol) no seriously if u have u know what?

u can log off tumblr and enter the world where u will never be exposed to my crazy nigger theories on my oppression ever again. U can go to the movies or turn on your tv and fall ever so gently into your cis heteronormative middle class white existential fantasy…u can get a loan, u can graduate from college and find decent work…u can be all appropriative as all get out. and no one will raise a hand in protest or one that u will actually feel.

Me: My nigger ass, someone says something racist to me and I HAVE NO WHERE TO RUN OR HIDE. NO ONE TO HEAR MY stories. NO ONe to care about my tears. If i tell someone I am affected by racism they tell me to do the opposite of what should be done. to cure for my self hatred is to skin bleach. the cure to my african american language is to stop using it and adopt american standard language. Basically the only way to live in your system without opposition is to relinquish who the fuck i am…to erase my already fucking erased identity to become u!

and even then. I am still black. STILL A THREAT.

So stop whining. After I think i have made a point on tumblr about racism…someone in real life reminds me I am just NIGGER. someone follows me around in a store I have been in a hundred times. Some white lady holds her purse for dear life. SOmeone calls me a nigger or tries to be my bff.

I dont get to escape. This shit doesnt end when I start crying.

can someone explain to me slowly how US PoC are responsible for US policies?

…y’all do remember what white people did to us, are still doing to us, and that they still own this country, right?

because maybe it’s just me, but this is sounding a lot like the whole “black people are responsible for the california gay marriage thing”.

I think a lot of the misunderstanding comes from conflating the POC who are targets of oppression being used as the front-line in expanding oppression to other folks. Like how Asians were brought to Hawai’i as proxies for the colonialist white folks who wanted more cheap labor.

Old US tactic: use one POC group as the proxy in oppression of another, kick back and hope for infighting (that doesnt negatively impact profit margins, of course)… :-(

The sad part is a lot of those PoC literally had no other choice. A lot of PoC STILL join the military NOW because it’s the only way they’ll get out of the fail hole they’re forced into.

exactly! perpetuating cycle perpetuates… Should we fault people who are exploited and abused to the point where the military route is seen as a viable route out of the situation they face? Nope. Should we target the system that exploits POC at home and abroad, hoping they turn against each other? HELL FUCKING YES!

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Yep, it’s one of the standard Machiavellian whiteness schemes. The British empire sent Indian conscripts to attack East Africa and recruited Nepalese Gurkhas to attack Afghanistan and China. The US sent Black soldiers to invade the Philippines. And it’s not just soldiers, it’s labor. Plantations in Louisiana and the West Indies imported Chinese and Indian labor to compete with Blacks. There must be hundreds of analogous examples. Just look at all these difficult conversations we’re forced into grappling our way through because whiteness has succeeded in jamming all manner of socio-cultural wedges between our communities.

lil bit of boldness added.

“I have to scoff at ‘Asian privilege’. Asians are less likely to be systemically brutalized through the prison-industrial complex- a relative privilege for sure that Asians must recognize as their fellow brown and black poc are being slaughtered by the police.” — cosmo-fascist

Well, not being systemically brutalized through the prison-industrial complex is definitely a scoff-worthy, demi-privilege.  I totally see your point now.

Just slaughter in the prisons.

that’s all.

no big.

I can’t even make sense of that quote.

Like. You scoff at the privilege. While pointing out one of the biggest ones.

I read this & I left my house to go to work & my brain kept turning it over alongside all the frustrating ass conversations I’ve had with this person who claims to want to build coalitions & who often sits up claiming to have the moral high ground & I just…don’t waste another word on this one. Really. Don’t. Because they wrote these words with a straight goddamned face & I see people cosigning & I’ll just be over here side eyeing & blocking because there are some wells that we should just cover & mark as dangerous. Really. Nothing good can come from engaging with this person. Ever.

If nothing else, the Trayvon Martin murder has really highlighted how invested people are in the idea of black life as worthless- the active backlash is all based in the idea of “How dare you waste our time, energy, and clearly limited empathy on a BLACK PERSON?!?”

This here, though, is basically the same thing.  Black people being murdered and wrongfully imprisoned = “Why are you wasting my time with that?”  Oh, ok.

And yeah - mark and move on.  Someone who is willing to basically say violent sociopathy on a society-wide level is “OK BY ME BECAUSE NO BIG THANG”, is the kind of person you can only expect Timecube logic from.

MORE proof of cosmo-fuckface’s everlasting antiblackness.

Not that more proof was needed. I stopped reading that pompously ignorant asshat like three tumblr names ago. If you wanna find Asian asshats or any variety of asshats of color on tumblr, they’re here, I assure you, in swelling numbers. Personally I couldn’t be less interested. As I often say, it’s not my job to persuade my enemies; it’s my job to defeat them. And by that, I don’t mean winning an online argument; I mean, defeating them in life.

I haven’t been into this convo because I can’t really see where it’s going and as a general rule I don’t like getting into conversations about serious, complex, highly charged matters when it’s unclear what’s at stake for whom or even exactly what’s being argued. There’s no question that anti-Blackness exists among Asian Americans, as well as among all other non-Black racial groups. Anybody who thinks Asians are somehow analogously Black or have it in any manner like Black folks is out of their fucking gourd. Did 30 million Asians get kidnapped, enslaved, shipped overseas on boats in chains, culturally fragmented, raped, and dehumanized for generation upon generation? Come on, man. Anyone who compares any other human story to the story of African Americans should probably shut the fuck up.

That doesn’t mean that Asian privilege is awesome and Asian Americans are joyriding in a white person’s paradise or some stupid shit like that. Fuck, just a few generations ago, most of the big newspapers in the USA were editorializing that Asians were more vile than Blacks (i.e. unable to assimilate and become docile, also more disease-ridden and unhygienic) and therefore must be legislated out of existence — not even three-fifths of a person, we’re talking kill ‘em all the only good chink is a dead chink. This turned around in 1965 with the passage of certain immigration laws (which created the “model minority”), but we are not all that far removed from some very heavy violent anti-Asian racism and I see it reflected in many attitudes today, including those of other people of color.

This includes the notion that somehow Asians are more susceptible to whiteness and assimilation than other races — which, if you think it through, is a racist and totally illogical notion. Persons of any race can and do get pulled into whiteness and its machinations. Socio-economic circumstances (i.e. immigration laws) in the US have created an upper-middle-class of Asian Americans who are the “model minority” and may very well be susceptible to the lure of embodying the racist class system, but it’s the socio-economics, not the race, which makes this so.

As for the joys of Asian American privilege, well I’ve got stories, friends, from my decades of living, which make a mockery of many of common generalizations. I’ve taken more lumps from authority and from the law than I can possibly get into here. I’ve had cops pull guns on me in both LA and NYC. In NYC, I have been told by an off-duty cop in a bar, “Maybe I’ll shoot a fucking chink tonight, trust me I can get away with it.” I’ve been pulled over numerous times for driving while Asian and have been prosecuted in court for driving dirty. All this might be because I, as an individual, have some kind of talent for clashing with authority; but what can I say, if it’s true that most Asians get treated well, obviously I missed that train.

When I was growing up, I was an avid sports fan and athlete. Guess what stopped me from being able to enjoy my youth in sports? Anti-Asian racism. Coaches looked past me. Peers mocked or dismissed me. I have stories, friends. Brutal stories. So many fights. Fights on basketball courts. Fights in locker rooms. Fights on hockey rinks. Fights on the baseball diamond. In the end, I found refuge in the art of fighting, in the martial arts, the one athletic realm where I was accepted.

I recently saw a post on tumblr saying that cis people have the privilege of making penis jokes all the time, and I thought, Obviously you didn’t grow up Asian in America. Guess what would happen if I make a penis joke at work or in a sports bar? Small dick jokes till last call. What a privilege. Emasculation is awesome. Even right now, as I’m going around Vancouver with my business partner V, who is Black, guess who gets more automatic respect when we walk into a sports bar together? It ain’t me, folks.

All this is to say, racism is a many-faceted beast. There’s no question about the ferocity of anti-Blackness is white supremacist society, including among Asian Americans who have been suckered into that system with the false belief that they would actually be held in any sort of favor if shit got real. But unless you’ve grown up Asian American, you just don’t know what it’s like and all there is to it. Racism has more than one axis; it operates along a number of seemingly contradictory but concurrent dimensions. Some forms are without question worse than others; but some are simply side by side.

BINGO

It’s also worth considering why whites basically swapped “Latinos are good, Asians are bad” for “Asians are good, Latinos are bad!” in the 1960s. Because a big part of the reason they were trying to replace Asians with Latinos was that Asians were heavily collective and heavily unionized and they had hoped Latinos would not be; when the Latinos started unionizing as well, the strategy shifted to “divide and conquer”.

That strategy WORKED. Just look at the way the United Farm Workers — which was a merger between an Asian union and a Mexican union, and the Asian union was the more active of the two — kicked out all the Asians and then erased them from its history. Does anyone even know that the famous California grape strike was carried out by Asian workers, with the Mexican union only joining in later on?

You’re correct. But be careful. To admit such things on tumblr is sure to be awarded with a charge of anti-blackness.

You must admit Asians are very privileged at all times and be gracious about it. If you don’t, you’ll suffer like cosmopolitan-fascist is right now. A bunch of dorky pseudo-social justice identity politics bloggers will take a five minute break from gaming and watching cartoons and get reactionary all over your dashboard and make accusations.

It’s always permissible to standardize Asian experience. Always.

so did you actually read the thread before you started talking shit? b/c the only person saying any of those things on this thread is you.

Now why would they read the whole thread or the other convos relating to this? I mean that involve acknowledging that Zuky called out cosmo for being a pompously ignorant asshat. Or noting that cosmo & others took a complicated conversation, got the wrong end of the stick & then got offended when they got called on it. Facts don’t matter bb.

Reading is fundamental.  Folks should try it sometime.  Magical things will happen.

Indeed, and I am gonna say I resent the fuck out of people trying to fucking appropriate my words to support anti-blackness when I consciously go out of my way to avoid falling into that. That is epically not okay.

And since we’re on that note, I shall explicitly point out that historical editorials arguing that Asians are even worse than blacks do not actually establish that Asians were at that time or any other time actually treated worse than blacks. Rather, those editorials were effectively trying to invoke white anti-blackness against Asians by comparing us to blacks. It’s a valuable data point in establishing that anti-blackness is dangerous to all people of color, as long as people are not utterly missing the point by falling for establishment divide-and-conquer games.

Bullshit. Total bullshit derail of a thread in which I was making a number of points which lay waste to this bullshit. I’ve been talking about and writing about racism, including anti-Asian racism, for probably longer than many tumblrers have been alive and have rarely if ever been attacked in any unfair manner for anti-Blackness. I do not regularly blurt confessions of Asian privilege (that’s not really my game) and I’m never gracious about anti-Asian or any other form of racism. There’s only one dork in this thread who probably needs to take a five minute break from gaming and watching cartoons, and it’s definitely not those who rail against anti-Blackness.
